The world's #1 brain coach, Jim Kwik says that in order to succeed in doing the things you say you want to do, then put it in your way. For example, if you want to read every day, put a book on your pillow where you can see it everyday and have to move it to get to sleep. And if you've already picked it up - you may as well do some reading. James Clear in his New York Times best seller, book "Atomic Habits" also says if you want to achieve something like going for a run every day, then just do something; like put your running shoes on. Its the same idea of, taking an action towards your goal, makes it so much easier to continue the activity.
This has been a really good learner for me. I've always made TO DO lists but rarely achieve everything on them or even a couple of things on them. So now what I do is write down my intentions on a list and just choose one simple thing to do this week, and even then I make it easier for myself to achieve it by tripping over my dumbbells. In my apartment building is a gym, but you know - that's all the way up in the stairs (ok the elevator) on the 19th floor! In my apartment is some pilates equipment, I have 2lb and 5lb dumbbells, stretching resistance bands, and I regularly work from home so i have no excuse NOT to exercise or at least stretch. I have an auto-immune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis which would greatly benefit from doing even a tiny bit of exercise and stretching every day. Do i do it? Of course not.
I have made sure every excuse is muted, but STILL I find reasons to excuse myself from exercise today.
"Dear Roe, Roe is unable to exercise today due to:
extreme tiredness;
fatigue;
taking the dog out;
washing her hair;
being a lazy ass watching tv on the sofa."
So to combat this I adopt the James Clear 1% better concept where you just do things 1% better than yesterday. I can do THAT! But I MAKE SURE I can't avoid it by putting the dumbbells on the floor between the sofa and anywhere else in the apartment. I have Jim Kwik's book ON the sofa where I usually sit, my pilates equipment has now been moved so that I SEE it when I sit at my desk and I have Alexa remind me every hour to get up and do a set of exercises. I also have a new rule where I can't watch another TV show or YouTube show until I start stretching.
Since then, I've had a 100% success rate of doing at least my 1% better than yesterday, if not more. I know I will greatly benefit by the end of the year.
